What is it all about ?
"I think Dan [Bell] and I both realized that something was missing - an element...in what we both know as Techno. It sounded great from a production point of standpoint, but there was a 'jack' element in the [old] structure. People would complain that there's no funk, no feeling in
Techno anymore, and the easy escape is to put a vocalist and some piano on top to fill the emotional gap. I thought it was time for a return to the original underground."
Robert Hood, early 1990's
This comment from one of the founding member of Underground Resistance, some 15-20 years ago, can surprise some of you.
And yet, the truth of this message is just so up-to-date.
We've been wondering for quite some time now, how come every dance floors have become just like one big lounge. Music sounds interesting and pro but, except rare exceptions, we question the motives of the musicians.
It is time for a true revival of the roots.
Remember the origins, bring your soul, do your part and, by so,
be active !
More than half a century ago, Theodor Adorno argued that the culture industry, which produced and circulated cultural commodities through the mass media, manipulated the population.
He identified popular culture as a reason why people become passive. Indeed the easy pleasures available through consumption of popular culture make people docile and content, no matter how terrible their economic circumstances.
The differences among cultural goods make them appear different, but they are in fact just variations on the same theme.
The techno music movement, by stretching up these elements of our culture, gave us a chance to overpass this system and get us back in some relative control of our minds.
One piece of advice that drive ourselves as a faceless collective is perfectly emphasized by the sayings of one of the founding father of techno, Derrick May.
"We had no inhibitions, no standards, we just did it. That's why it came off so fresh and innovative, and that's why...we got the best of the best."
